FBI SEES RISE IN FRAUD SCHEMES RELATED TO THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) PANDEMIC

Scammers are leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic to steal your money, your personal information, or both. Don’t let them. Protect yourself and do your research before clicking on links purporting to provide information on the virus; donating to a charity online or through social media; contributing to a crowdfunding campaign; purchasing products online; or giving up your personal information in order to receive money or other benefits. The FBI advises you to be on the lookout for the following:

Fake CDC Emails.

Watch out for emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or other organizations claiming to offer information on the virus. Do not click links or open attachments you do not recognize. Fraudsters can use links in emails to deliver malware to your computer to steal personal information or to lock your computer and demand payment. Be wary of websites and apps claiming to track COVID-19 cases worldwide. Criminals are using malicious websites to infect and lock devices until payment is received.

Phishing Emails.

Look out for phishing emails asking you to verify your personal information in order to receive an economic stimulus check from the government. While talk of economic stimulus checks has been in the news cycle, government agencies are not sending unsolicited emails seeking your private information in order to send you money. Phishing emails may also claim to be related to:

  • Charitable contributions
  • General financial relief
  • Airline carrier refunds
  • Fake cures and vaccines
  • Fake testing kits

Counterfeit Treatments or Equipment.

Be cautious of anyone selling products that claim to prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19. Be alert to counterfeit products such as sanitizing products and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including N95 respirator masks, goggles, full face shields, protective gowns, and gloves. More information on unapproved or counterfeit PPE can be found at www.cdc.gov/niosh. You can also find information on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, www.fda.gov, and the Environmental Protection Agency website, www.epa.gov. Report counterfeit products at www.ic3.gov and to the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center at iprcenter.gov.

If you are looking for accurate and up-to-date information on COVID-19, the CDC has posted extensive guidance and information that is updated frequently. The best sources for authoritative information on COVID-19 are www.cdc.gov and www.coronavirus.gov. You may also consult your primary care physician for guidance.

The FBI is reminding you to always use good cyber hygiene and security measures. By remembering the following tips, you can protect yourself and help stop criminal activity:

  • Do not open attachments or click links within emails from senders you don’t recognize.
  • Do not provide your username, password, date of birth, social security number, financial data, or other personal information in response to an email or robocall.
  • Always verify the web address of legitimate websites and manually type them into your browser.
  • Check for misspellings or wrong domains within a link (for example, an address that should end in a “.gov” ends in .com” instead).

If you believe you are the victim of an Internet scam or cyber crime, or if you want to report suspicious activity, please visit the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.

DIY Oil Stain Remedy

Submitted by a homeowner and performed at your own risk, see ** below:

Power washing a driveway puts the oil into the gutter and eventually the sewer system. A better, and much cheaper way, is to LIFT the oil and dispose in the garbage.

Supplies needed:
-Old junk broom 🧹
-Dustpan
-About a quart, or so, of Kitty Litter. Cheapest clay filter you can find.
-Secret ingredient:  Naptha gas. Maybe two cups or so depending on the size of the stain.

What is Naptha gas?  Cigarette lighter fluid or better; Coleman stove fuel. Comes in gallon cans. Should cost about $8/gallon. At most you’ll only use 1/2 quart. Stores that sell Coleman camping  stoves either carry the fuel or can tell you where to buy it. This IS NOT propane. It’s a refined white gas. Back in the 20’s many people burned “white gas” (Naptha) in lamps for light.

The cheap and environmental way to put oil into your garbage can:

1. Pour a little gas (maybe a cup) over the stain.

2. Take the broom and go over the puddle once or twice to loosen anything semi stuck to the concrete. The gas instantly dissolves the oil.

3. Pour a small quantity of the Kitty Litter over the mess you have just created.

4. Using your dirty, oily, messy, broom, move the kitty litter through your puddle. Just lightly a couple of times. All you’re doing is COATING the litter with your oil/gas mixture.

5. Go have an iced tea.  Mother Nature will evaporate ALL the gas. The clay (kitty litter) will now be dry but it will have absorbed all the oil.

6. Fill your dustpan and dump the clay in the trash.

7. Now make sure to identify the location of your oil leak, AND GET IT FIXED.

But now you “sorta” have a new minor issue. The old grease stained concrete is now lily white and stands out amid your old dirty concrete. But not to worry, Nature soon covers your beautiful clean concrete spot!!

One Caveat:
While regular gasoline will dissolve the oil stain as well as Naptha it leaves a stain of its own.

**Safety Warning:
Naphtha can affect you when breathed in and by passing through your skin. * Contact can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. * Breathing Naphtha can irritate the nose and throat. * Exposure to Naphtha can cause headachedizziness, nausea and vomiting

Important Notice Dog Owners

We have lots of homeowners, with fur babies that have become part of the family, and we love that! However, increasingly, owners have been showing a disregard for the rules of our community, particularly the ones regarding use of leashes. This has become a serious issue as we’ve had a number of incidents lately!

The Board of Directors will not tolerate homeowners, who risk other people’s safety, by not only ignoring our governing documents but also Clark County ordinance 10.36.040 (see restraint) which requires that dogs be on a leash or restrained. We are asking all homeowners to be vigilant in reporting unleashed dogs to the office immediately.

Heritage Square Rules & Regulations:
Section D Pets (1)
”dogs are to be maintained on a leash when outside the boundaries of the owner’s lot. Dogs in the front yard, not under direct supervision, must be on a leash.”

Heritage Square Rules & Regulations:
Section D Pets (4)
“Pets are not allowed to roam freely and unsupervised within the complex. Cats and dogs are not permitted on roof tops”

PLEASE BE AWARE:
Owners caught with their dogs off leash WILL be fined.
Any pet attacks will result in a $500 dollar fine.
Authority of the Board, to do so, can be found in the CC&R’s section 5.2 (c)(ii).

Keep your dogs leashed for the safety of your neighbor, your dog, and your neighbor’s dog… and please continue to enjoy our beautiful neighborhood.

Town Hall Delay

We have not forgotten about the town hall gathering. Due to the plumbing issue in the clubhouse we had to put it off.  Now with the country in crises over COVID 19, not being able to gather, has caused an even longer delay. Please know that we will reschedule as soon as possible and we are very excited to gather and hear from you… when it’s safe. Also, feel free to communicate sooner. Why Do I Pay for Amenities I Don’t Use?

This is a common question for homeowners who wonder why we have to maintain certain amenities. CAI’s Frugal Freddie answered it this way:

“When a home homeowner purchases property within an HOA, one of the contractual promises made by the homeowner is to abide by the association’s governing documents. Those governing documents set forth the intentions of the community as a whole with respect to how the community should be run, appearances, restrictions etc. By agreeing that the CC&Rs, Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations govern the community, the homeowner (as a member of the association) agrees to support the intended plan for the community, including all its amenities.”

You should also know that our governing documents require us to maintain and restore our amenities.

April Yard Sale Rescheduled

Due to covid-19, Corona virus, and the state of affairs, locally and nationally, we have decided to reschedule the yard sale. We will not be hanging banners or advertising the yard sale for April. We understand how frustrating this might be and hope homeowners will understand that we only have their safety in mind. We are hopeful the new dates of May 2nd and 3rd panout, however we will update you as soon as we have enough information from the state of Nevada, to move forward. Please stay healthy and safe!
